Glassware

Everyday glasses will do just fine in the dishwasher as long as they’re placed so that they don’t bump into each other during the wash cycle, increasing the chances of chips and cracks. This is especially true of wine glasses with delicate stems.

Dishwashers can etch glass over time through a combination of detergent, heat and dissolved minerals in water, eventually clouding the glass. If this has been a problem in the past, try cutting down on the amount of detergent you use when cleaning glasses in the dishwasher.

Use a plastic dishpan for cleaning all glasses by hand. The plastic has a lot more “give” to it than the sink does. You’ll chip and break far fewer glasses in a plastic tub.

Most etched glass can be cleaned in the same way, but if soil dulls the etching, soak in a plastic dishpan for a while, and then use an old toothbrush to clean etched surfaces.

Wash crystal and other fine glassware by hand. Fill a plastic dishpan with warm water and dishwashing liquid, and wash them one at a time. Rinse and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
