Basic Housekeeping - Natural Cleaning Products

By HC Staff

You don’t always have to have the latest, greatest cleaning products, although we love them as much as you do. Instead, look no further than your own kitchen cabinets for common household products that can wage war against stains and odors. Consider baking soda, lemon juice and white distilled vinegar: simple is often best.

Baking soda, a.k.a. sodium bicarbonate, will neutralize carpet odor: just dust on carpet prior to vacuuming. Effective pet carpet deodorizers frequently contain this old, reliable, powdery standby. Moving up from the floor, its lightly abrasive action removes marks and stains from countertops and dinnerware when combined with water to make a paste.

Because of its acidic properties, vinegar works well to remove lime scale in the shower and around sink surfaces. Lemon juice and vinegar, each used alone, also restore brass and copper.

Add vinegar to your laundry loads to soften water, which will allow detergent to work more efficiently.

You can mix borax, also called sodium borate, with vinegar or lemon juice to clean the toilet.

Add essential oils or herbs for a nice scent in your natural cleaning solutions. Browse HousekeepingChannel.com for more tips on green cleaning.
