Oven Cleaning Made Easier

By HC Staff

An easy and economical way to clean your oven is to put it off until tomorrow. If you don't have the luxury of a self-cleaning oven, before retiring for the evening warm the oven for thirty minutes and turn it off. Place a small bowl of straight ammonia on the top shelf and a large pan of hot water on the bottom shelf, close the door and let the ammonia vapors work overnight.

In the morning, in a well-ventilated kitchen, slowly open the oven (avoid breathing the fumes) and after letting the air clear wash and wipe away baked-on grease with soapy water, sponge and a non-abrasive scrubbing pad. If deposits are stubborn put the ammonia to work another night while you sleep on the problem, then repeat the wiping procedure in the AM.

Don't delve right into scrubbing those shelves. Lay the shelves on a towel in the tub and cover with hot water. Sprinkle in a cup of dishwasher or laundry detergent, soak overnight and they'll clean easily the next day. Wash your tub afterward.

Remove the haze from the oven window by scouring with baking soda and a damp cloth.

Another option that does not involve chemicals is to use a steam vapor system (see our tool listings).
