Dr. Edward A. Emmett MD, MS
Edward A. Emmett is a Professor and is Director of Academic Programs in Occupational Medicine and Deputy Director of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is active in clinical practice, research and education in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Dr. Emmett graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine in Sydney Australia, and in Occupational Medicine including a fellowship in Occupational Dermatology at the University of Cincinnati. He has a Masters Degree in Environmental Health from the University of Cincinnati. After being Assistant and Associate Professor in Environmental Health, Medicine and Dermatology at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Emmett was Professor and Founding Director of the Divisions of Occupational Medicine in the Schools of Hygiene and Public Health and of Medicine and of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the Johns Hopkins University from 1978 to 1988. At Johns Hopkins he developed the residency-training program in Occupational Medicine, the doctoral program in Occupational Health and conducted extensive research into occupational and environmental diseases. His research contributions included those in occupational and environmental skin diseases, ultraviolet radiation effects on skin and eyes, the toxicity of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, PCBs, organometals, monomers used in plastics and resins, and other subjects.
Dr. Emmett returned to Australia from 1988 to 1996 where he was Director of the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety and Chief Executive of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, a body with functions partially corresponding with those of OSHA, NIOSH, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and EPA in the United States. The National Commission was a tripartite body with representation for state and federal governments, labor and industry. In this position Dr. Emmett led Australia's efforts to implement uniform health and safety standards, to improve health and safety performance in industry, to improve the statistical base on which performance was measured, and to assist neighboring Asian-Pacific countries to improve their health and safety. Dr. Emmett also served as a Commissioner for the Workers Compensation Scheme for Federal Government employees in Australia for much of this time.
Dr. Emmett is a member of the Delta Omega Public Health Honorary Society. He is a recipient of the Fight for Sight Citation for Clinical Research, and of the Kehoe Award of Merit from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of the Occupational Medicine Scholarship Fund and is a past Director of the American Board of Toxicology and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Journal of Occupational Health (Japan) and the International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health. He is author of more than 140 original papers, book chapters and books in the field of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Toxicology and by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine. In Philadelphia he is a member of Advisory Committees for the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Sciences Center and of the Monell Chemical Senses Center.
Dr. Emmett has been a member of many national and international committees. He has been Vice Chairman of the Joint ILO/WHO Committee on Occupational Health; Chairman of the Regional Working Group on Occupational Health for WHO; a member the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Occupational Health, Chair of the Implementation and Methodology Committee for the Institute for Health and Productivity, Chairman of the Governor's Council on Toxic Substances of the State of Maryland and Chairman of the State of Maryland Hazardous Toxic Substances Study Commission, among other appointments.
At the University of Pennsylvania Dr. Emmett has developed a unique and successful residency-training program with on-job, on-campus characteristics for physicians in full-time employment in occupational medicine.
Dr. Emmett's current research activities include studies of effects of community exposure to pollution from perfluorinated chemicals. He is also working with the United Auto Workers Union (UAW), General Motors Corporation and Delphi Corporation in a new role as the "Risk Communicator" to better translate research results into preventive actions by management and workers at the workplace.
