Foam rubber

Foam rubber is a common material made of a number of different compounds that is used for padding in household furniture, such as couches and chairs, and pillows. Foam rubber cushioning, which is often covered by decorative fabric, doesn’t normally require cleaning as long as it remains dry.

This material does absorb odors, however, and can be air-dried in the shade. Don’t place these cushions in direct sunlight, which will degrade the rubber or synthetic materials used in foam rubber.

Careful use of a fabric odor neutralizer or baking soda can be used, but soaking foam rubber, which can absorb liquids like a sponge, in water is not recommended. Water in foam rubber that is not completely removed can lead to odor issues, stains and mildew.
