Many jobs around the home involve the use of hazardous materials or tools that can cause serious injury, and housekeeping is no exception. Personal protective equipment is worn to reduce or eliminate the hazards associated with certain chemicals, equipment, and techniques used in cleaning the home. This term may sound fancy, but protecting yourself doesn’t involve exotic or expensive clothing or accessories. Eye protection in the form of safety goggles costs anywhere from $5 to $20; goggles are sold widely in paint stores, hardware outlets, and home centers. Latex gloves and rubber gloves cost no more than a few dollars. Disposable latex gloves cost only pennies per pair. Even neoprene gloves, used during especially dirty or hazardous work, won’t set you back more than about $10. And for those jobs where long sleeves and long pants are recommended, coveralls or an old flannel shirt and jeans are all you’ll really need.
