Plain water will clean slightly dirty windows well, especially when using a microfiber cloth, but a cleaner may be necessary for very dirty or neglected windows. Try the following inexpensive window-cleaning formula instead of commercial preparations:
- 3.25 quarts (3.1 l) water
- 1 pint (475 ml) rubbing alcohol
- One-half cup (120 ml) soapy ammonia, or a squirt of dish detergent
Mix all ingredients well and pour into spray bottles. Clearly label all storage containers and spray bottles for ease of identification and safety. Isopropyl alcohol and ammonia are both poisons that should be stored out of the reach of children. The mixture performs well and doesn't tend to leave excessive streaks.
Whether you use this homemade solution or a commercial preparation, carry a rag to wipe drips and overspray off adjacent metal or painted surfaces. Alcohol, ammonia and chemicals used in window cleaning products can be tough on paint and aluminum.
