Some of us could spend hours thinking of all the things we would like to do, while others are always busy doing something—anything. Both personality types have strong advantages and disadvantages. Dreamers can definitely benefit from putting some action into all those lofty goals, while doers can benefit from taking some time to visualize the big picture and what they want all of their activity to accomplish.
Direction comes from having a sense of purpose. One of the classic books on time management, How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life, has readers start with defining long-term goals. With those goals in mind, prioritizing “to-dos” becomes easier, because the smaller action steps needed to achieve long term goals come first.
Motivation means knowing exactly why you want to accomplish something and what you expect to get out of it. And there’s nothing more motivating than knowing HOW to do something you really want to do. Conversely, knowing you SHOULD do something when it seems impossible leads to nothing but discouragement. Discouragement is pretty much the opposite of motivation.
In the article, Stick to Your Resolution to Get Organized, Lea Schneider writes, “Thinking something has got to change and making it change are often two different things.” Amen! This is a terrific article to read if your long-term goals require getting and staying organized. (Most of them do!)
