How often should you vacuum?

By HC Staff

Recently, I spent time using a new vacuum cleaner to prepare for writing a review of it for HousekeepingChannel.com. To do a thorough review, I wanted to see how much dirt and dust the vacuum cleaner actually picked up in a high-traffic area of my home.

I have to admit, I was very surprised at the results. No matter how many times I vacuumed the same area, the vacuum cleaner kept picking up more dirt. I couldn’t see any dirt in the carpet (in fact, it was looking pretty good), but there was no mistaking it in the dust compartment of the vacuum cleaner. The experience made me realize that the twice-a-week cleaning we regularly do in our home may not be sufficient for that particular high-traffic area, where busy feet come and go a hundred times a day.

The article, Why You Want Carpet to Come Clean, really inspires me to make time to do an even better job in areas that need it.

In Q&A on Asthma, Allergies, and Carpet, The CRI recommends that people with allergies should vacuum twice a week using a vacuum with good dust containment. As I learned, there may even be areas of carpet that could use vacuuming more frequently.

Frequent cleaning is not just good for health. Vacuuming thoroughly and often is one of the best ways to protect and maintain your carpeting. Dust or dirt trapped in carpet can abrade the fibers, causing the carpet to wear out sooner and appear matted.
