Basic Housekeeping - No-Fail Organizing Tips

By HC Staff

Here are ten ways to help organize your universe. These classic strategies will help you maintain order all year round.

Organizing Tip #1: Keep things where you use them. This makes it easy to put them away when you’re finished.

Organizing Tip #2: Store small items together in containers by category. (For example: vitamins, medicines, grooming supplies, batteries, etc.)

Organizing Tip #3: Schedule purging sessions before anniversaries or other gift-giving events.

Organizing Tip #4: Use your vertical space. Sturdy shelves make good use of vacant walls.

Organizing Tip #5: As much as possible, make your organizational system work for you. “A place for everything and everything in its place” could mean alphabetized, color-coded files, sorting paperwork into baskets or stackable trays, or just storing something where you're likely to look for it.

Organizing Tip #6: Revisit your organizing systems yearly (or more often). If they aren’t working for you, change them. Sometimes only minor adjustments are needed. Systems do not need to be "perfect", they just need to work.

Organizing Tip #7: Break large organizing projects into smaller segments. Don’t start more than you can finish in one session, or, using a 15 minute timer try to "beat the clock" and accomplish as much as you can.

Organizing Tip #8: When you feel overwhelmed, just find one thing that you can do, and then do it. Afterwards, move on to the next thing. Don’t let indecision cause you to lose your momentum.

Organizing Tip #9: Open mail near the trash can or shredder and deal with each item immediately.

Organizing Tip #10: Don't buy anything new until you feel you have accomplished most if not all of your organizing goals.
