Backpack vacuums prove there’s no such thing as a "difficult area" once you’ve found the right tool.
1. Visit the high spots in your home, catching vents, blinds, ceiling fans, plant shelves, cobwebs in high corners — the list goes on.
2. Remove dust and debris from edges of carpet along the baseboards. On many backpacks, crevice tools are carried on the waist belt for speed and ease of access.
3. Maintain precision control around light furniture, like end tables, that you don’t want to bump with a heavy vacuum.
4. Turn off the beater bar to quickly vacuum light area rugs and fringe edges that an old-style upright would eat for lunch.
5. Turn off the beater bar to move from plush carpet to linoleum without re-tooling.
6. Get into tight spots in small or crowded rooms. Detailing a couch near a coffee table can crowd your movements enough without your vacuum taking a hundred or more square inches of floor space.
7. Clean under bureaus, desks and other pieces that provide enough room to collect dust — but not enough to accommodate an upright.
8. Vacuum near computer and other electrical cords without risk of a beater bar chewing them up.
9. Stairs: the ergonomic nightmare. Forget balancing an upright on steps, working on your knees or stretching a hose to reach the midpoint between landings. A backpack will get you where you need to go.
10. Use a backpack anywhere you want to get to the business of cleaning without pausing to push, pull or drag along an upright or canister. Several major maid franchises use backpack vacuums as their tool of choice.
Check into the assortment of available backpack models carefully. Variations in airflow, weight, filtration and presence of a beater bar can fine-tune your vacuuming performance.
