For safety's sake, take a few moments to put these precautions into place:
Fall
- Clean the tracks on sliding glass doors and windows, otherwise drain holes may fill up with debris and water may get into the house. It can show up as water damage near doors and windows. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Once water damage has occurred, the cost for repair can be quite high.
- The week of October 3-9 is Fire Prevention Week. Inspect your entire home for fire hazards, including all bedding. Some mattresses and other bedding may be in violation of the Flammable Fabrics Act. A little research on your mattresses can go a long way in keeping your family safe.
Monthly
- Test your smoke alarms. Test the alarm with the test button once a month. At least twice per year, test the alarm with smoke from a candle or an aerosol canister specifically made for testing smoke alarms. Remember to replace the battery once per year.
- Check your carbon monoxide alarms. Press the test button once a month. This is only testing the alarm’s ability to sound an alarm not to detect carbon monoxide. Because of this, buy an alarm that meets Underwriters Laboratory 2034 Standard which guarantees your alarm meets regulatory standards. If the alarm meets the standards, you’ll see the UL/ULC seal on the product.
